Episode 57: Compassion: How Love Responds to Suffering with Robert Cusick

Oct 12, 2026

What if compassion is not something you need to create, but something already within you, waiting to be uncovered and cultivated?

In this episode, Britta sits down with her longtime friend Robert Cusick, former Director of Compassion Education at Stanford University’s CCARE, to explore compassion as Love’s natural response to suffering. Robert shares his own journey, from an early instinct to show up for others, through the painful end of his marriage, to becoming a Buddhist monk and ultimately devoting his life to the study and practice of compassion.

Together, they explore why self-compassion can be so difficult, how suffering can become a doorway rather than something to escape, and the quiet “stirring in the heart” that can become our North Star.

At the heart of their conversation is a simple truth: compassion is the way Love meets suffering. And learning to recognize and receive it may be one of the most important lessons in our School of Love.
